5 Packing Hacks Everyone Should Know Before Moving

There’s no doubt about it! Packing and moving is a huge chore, especially if you have lived in the same place for a long time. You now get to go through all of the closets, cabinets, and drawers and pack everything safely into boxes.

Moving can also be expensive. You’ll need a lot of different things on hand to pack that you wouldn’t normally have. Whether it’s your first move, or you are a novice, here are a few hacks that you might not have thought of that can save you time and money.

1. Don’t buy boxes.

Boxes can be really expensive. And, at the end of the moving process, all of that money spent will get tossed into the recycling bin. You can find some strong boxes at some of your local retailers. Shoe stores and clothing stores have boxes perfect for almost anything. And, liquor stores have boxes strong enough and small enough for dishes and other heavier breakables. You can always ask stores where you regularly shop. They will usually be able to set aside some boxes for you.

2. Old Newspaper

Why buy bubble wrap and foam pellets to protect your breakables when old newspaper is free. While newspapers aren’t in as many homes as they used to be, you still get all of those mailers and local papers with coupons. If you start saving them as soon as you know that you are moving, you might have enough to pack the entire kitchen.

3. Use your linens.

You can also use sheets, pillowcases, towels, and washcloths to wrap breakables. These can come in really handy with some of the bigger items that you are packing like pictures, vases, or even lamp bases. It’s also a great way to save on space. You won’t need separate boxes to pack your linens in.

4. Use trash bags.

It might not be the best idea to use them in place of boxes. But, they are great for moving clothing that is on hangers. Instead of putting those clothes in boxes, you can bundle them together and drape large trash bags over them. The plastic will keep them safe, and the hangers make great handles for carrying them during the moving process.

5. Label everything!

It’s a must! Take the time to put labels on every box as you are packing them. It will make your life so much easier when it’s time to unpack.

There are probably plenty of other hacks out there. But, these will get you started, and hopefully make your move a little easier on both your sanity and your wallet.
